Bourtzi

The small island of Bourtzi is located opposite Alikes beach and it covers an area of 30,000 square meters. One can simply swim to the island if he or she wishes to visit it. Today, the island is uninhabited.

In the Byzantine era, there was a castle on Bourtzi which operated as a naval base for the Byzantine fleet during the 7th century AD. The Byzantine admiral Nasar (under the rule of Basil I the Macedonian) used it as a base for his attacks against the Siracusani. There are indications that a Venetian fort was also erected on the island, which must have been used during the period of Morosini when he and his fleet sailed the area during the years 1687 – 1693. However, the castle that is salvaged today on the island was built in 1827 during the years of Governor Kapodistrias by the Bavarian Philhellene Carl von Heideck in order to protect the port. From the castle, the people of Poros monitored the ships that were coming in from Hydra. The castle played an important role in the rebellion of 1831 led by Miaoulis. Miaoulis managed to take over the fort where he appointed captain Falaga as castellan in charge of protecting the narrow passage with his artillery. And then he used it as a base to attack Kapodistrias.

Next to the island of Bourtzi, there is a privately owned little island called Lasareto. The small island belongs to the Karra family.
